Pilot Tarnoc in Nootdorp: 1950s homes completely gas-free!

The Energy Transition in the Netherlands is in Full Swing

With the TUNES project, we are taking a major step toward a future without natural gas. In collaboration with housing corporation Staedion and six other companies, we have completely eliminated natural gas from several 1950s homes in Nootdorp. This project demonstrates that the sustainability of older, less well-insulated homes is not only necessary but also achievable!

An Innovative Collaboration

Within the TUNES project, we are working with seven partners to develop an integrated, gas-free renovation concept. The technologies used in this pilot include:

Tarnoc’s Turbine Heat Pump – An innovative, all-electric solution for efficient heating.

NEStore Thermal Storage by Newton Energy Solutions – A smart heat storage system that enhances energy efficiency.

Home Energy Management System (HEMS) by SEITA – An open software platform for energy optimization and flexibility.

By combining these technologies, we have created an intelligent and scalable solution for making existing homes more sustainable.

Why is this Project so Important?

Many Dutch homes—especially older ones—still rely on natural gas. The challenge lies in finding solutions that are not only sustainable but also practical and economically viable. This project proves that, with the right collaboration and innovative technologies, we can meet this challenge successfully.

Collaboration with Strong Partners

This project is being carried out in partnership with:

DuraVermeer – Implementation and construction modifications.

TNO – Research and performance monitoring.

Staedion – Housing corporation and property management.

Twinstone – Communication and resident engagement.

• Financial support comes from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy through the Top Sector Energy Subsidy.

The Next Step in the Energy Transition

This project marks an important milestone in the transition toward gas-free housing. By leveraging innovative technologies and a multidisciplinary approach, we demonstrate that the sustainability of older homes can be achieved quickly and effectively.
